6850 Dornbirn
Austria
Almost thirty years after traffic was banned from Dornbirn’s Marktplatz square, the west of the city centre around Schulgasse road has now also been declared car-free – with the redesigned Kirchpark providing a scenic link between Marktstrasse road and the square.

Not only does this represent a safe and functional connection between two central areas, it serves as a vital embodiment of urban quality, identity and authenticity in Dornbirn. The multifaceted concept from Innsbruck-based firm LAAC Architekten has seen this gateway to bustling Marktplatz square transformed into an oasis of urban calm. Here, visitors can savour the quiet as they watch the nearby crowds pass by and enjoy uninterrupted views of the historic buildings that grace Dornbirn city centre. The design of the Kirchpark focuses on its topography, using the elevated location of the park to generate entirely new perspectives. This also ensures that the parking spaces, obstructed building facades and the adjacent building in the eastern section of the Kirchpark are neatly removed from view. However, the route that cuts diagonally across and the smaller avenues bordering the park have been successfully retained. The road covering used in Marktplatz square has also been extended through to the Kirchpark, enabling small events to be held there. Topographical conditions were used to different effect where the park meets Schulgasse road. The border between these two areas, which is located in the south-west corner of the park and serves to link the historical and modern elements of the city centre, now features a series of curved steps that are perfect for taking a seat, having a breather and soaking up the sun.
